Freed Guantánamo Prisoners Taunt US as Closure Plan Falls Apart

In his first week in office, US President Barack Obama signed an executive order to close the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay. But other countries are not stepping forward to accept the prisoners, as reports emerge about former Guantánamo inmates charged with plotting new crimes. The US has ordered an evaluation of the inmates and continues to urge allies to accept some prisoners. Even US politicians who support the prison's closure adamantly oppose transferring the prisoners to facilities within US borders. Critics contend that some of the prisoners are young and innocent of crimes, while security analysts suggest some are dangerous and intent on attacking the US and allies; that volatile mix of young and dangerous is compounded by resentment and a long and unjust confinement. Any presumption of innocence goes by the wayside, as files on the inmates are scattered, and the exact danger posed by such individuals is unknown. - YaleGlobal
