The Guardian: Report Says Foreign States May Have Interfered in Brexit Vote

A British parliamentary committee report suggests that “Foreign governments such as Russia and China may have been involved in the collapse of a voter registration website in the run-up to the EU referendum,” Rajeev Syal reports for the Guardian and describes a denial-of-services attack. “The committee does not identify who may have been responsible, but has noted that both Russia and China use an approach to cyber-attacks based on an understanding of mass psychology and of how to exploit individuals.” The government, working under the assumption of a spike in demand stressing the website, did extend the registration deadline, and the report suggests the attack did not influence the referendum’s final outcome. The report also examines the country’s governance system, questioning the responsibilities for a prime minister to prepare for either outcome in such referendums and then relaying detailed assessments to voters for an informed decision. – YaleGlobal
