ISIS: The Greatest Terror Threat Since Osama bin Laden
The Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham, otherwise known as ISIS, is storming through Iraq. The Iraqi army as so failed to stop or contain the Sunni militants, and ISIS retrieves equipment abandoned by the Iraqis. The group is well funded, initially with aid from Qatar and Saudi Arabia for Syria rebels. “The Obama administration claims it will stand alongside the elected government in Baghdad, which is now pleading for coalition airstrikes to halt ISIS' relentless advance,” write Jamsheed Choksy and Carol Choksy, both with Indiana University, for Real Clear World. “Yet after losing 4,487 lives and spending over $1 trillion, the U.S. seems reluctant to intervene -- believing the harm can be isolated to Iraq and Syria.” ISIS threatens Lebanon and Jordan and beyond: “As territory, wealth and equipment keep being added to its resource stream, ISIS' capabilities to expand, provision and train its cohorts will grow exponentially.” The international community has adopted a wait-and-see attitude, but the writers urge regional and international powers to organize for an immediate takedown. – YaleGlobal
