Kissinger, Huntsman – US and China Need Cyber Detente
The US and China would both benefit from a treaty designating some areas as off limits from cyber-attacks, pointed out former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former US Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, who is also planning to run for the US presidency. In recent weeks, the International Monetary Fund, the US Senate and major corporations have been victims of hacking, and according to Kissinger, failure to cooperate will deteriorate relations. “Security experts say the borderless nature of the Web requires a coordinated global response against hacking,” report Paul Eckert and Daniel Magnowski for Reuters. “The view that cyber security is a technical problem, rather than a strategic one, has meant that it has not been a priority.” International cooperation is challenged by varying philosophies about the internet and its purpose. But as an Indonesia official pointed out, internal and external hacking left unchecked could lead to “institutional collapse.” – YaleGlobal
