The Way Humans Get Electricity Is About to Change Forever

Renewable forms of energy gain favor with investors. “Trillions of dollars will be invested over the next 25 years, driving some of the most profound changes yet in how humans get their electricity,” reports Tom Randall, based on a report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance that forecasts global power market trends through 2040: Solar prices are falling and could be competitive for most world markets in a decade. Resistance by the fossil fuel industry and governments to public and scientific opinions expressing alarm over climate change could mean the new markets will be decentralized. Demand for power is slowing due to innovations like the LED light and greater efficiencies. About $8 trillion will be invested in renewables over the next 25 years, but without additional government action and with developing nations expected to rely on coal, that’s not enough to slow climate change. – YaleGlobal
