Why Le Pen Just Lost Her Best Chance to Win French Election

An anti-immigrant, anti-EU party did not fare well in France’s regional elections – despite predictions that coordinated terrorist attacks on Paris could swell support for the National Front, explains reports Gregory Viscus for BloombergBusiness. Candidates in the regional races must win 10 percent in the first round of voting to proceed to the second round. For the second round, though two other parties teamed up. The Socialist party withdrew candidates from three regions where the National Front had its best chances and asked supporters to vote for a likeminded party. “[M]ost French remain opposed to [Marine Le Pen’s] calls to ditch the euro and re-establish national borders, as well as her comments about the dangers of immigration,” writes Viscus, and he quotes a scholar who concludes that the French system “demands the ability to strike alliances with other parties.” – YaleGlobal
