AP: Children Killed as Airstrikes Hit Bus in Yemen

Rebels in Yemen claim that a Saudi-led airstrike hit a market and schoolbus carrying children on a field trip. More than 50 people were killed and 75 were wounded. Associated Press reports: “U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the coalition air strike and called on all parties to spare civilians and ‘to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, in particular the fundamental rules of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack,’ U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said…. Impoverished Yemen, on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is now in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with more than 22.2 million people in need of assistance.” The civil war in Yemen has raged since 2015: Saudi Arabia backs the internationally recognized government and Iran backs the Houthi rebels who control much of northern Yemen and the capital. The US and other western powers support Saudi Arabia with weapons and military aid despite international criticism. – YaleGlobal
