Art and the Asianization of Canada

Near half of Canada’s permanent resident immigrants are from China, Philippines, India and Pakistan, and more than half of the nation's international students are from China, India and Korea. The newcomers influence economics, politics, culture, and increasingly Canada’s art scene, reports the Asian Century Institute. Toronto’s East Gallery reflects the Asianization of Canada’s economy, and Asia now has a “film summit” in Toronto. The international art scene draws tourists, investors and Canadians alike. The East Gallery arranges traveling exhibitions to other cities in Canada, including Vancouver where 40 percent of the residents are Asian. The Asian Institute report explains the motivation: “the metier of ‘galleryist’” involves animating a dialogue, an exchange, between artists, art collectors, aficionados and the general public. And the immense diversity of Canada's urban centers offers a vast [palette] of possibilities for this.” – YaleGlobal
