Asia Takes Starring Role
Hollywood has recently begun to take notice of South East Asian stars and movies, introducing actresses such as Fann Wong to American cinema and expanding the repertoire of Asian films released in the United States. Southeast Asia’s time in the US limelight is largely due to the influence of major Hollywood names, including actor Tom Cruise and director Francis Ford Coppola, who have ensured that certain films and stars enjoy more than just regional success. Indeed, though critics have lauded the talent and content of these films, it is undeniable that their international success relies on conditions provided by Hollywood – press, reviews, great marketing, and big names. However, though the relationship between Hollywood and South East Asia seems largely one-sided, the US film industry has been rewarded by an expansion of its audience and box office receipts in the region. Movie-goers across South East Asia are going to see American films en masse, drawn by the Asian names Hollywood has helped make international. – YaleGlobal
