Back to the Great Game in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan borders two great powers, Russia and China, and lies within Europe’s sphere of influence. Its geography, together with its massive oil reserves and majority Muslim population, make Kazakhstan a point of interest for all three parties. However, the European Parliament has thus far ruled out courting the central Asian state because of human-rights violations. Charles Tannock, member of the European Parliament, bemoans this decision, and encourages the EU to pursue ties with Kazakhstan to prevent the nation from abandoning its secular orientation or strengthening ties with Russia or China. The former Soviet republic is a prominent member both of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, an institution that draws Russian criticism, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, dominated by the Chinese and Russians. Kazakhstan has demonstrated an interest in linking with the West, but that could fade if Europe does not return the favor. – YaleGlobal
