Bloomberg: China Back on Kim’s Side
North Korea's Kim Jong Un got what he wanted with nuclear weapons: global recognition. South Korea’s Moon Jae-in, in seeking peace with North Korea, served as a mediator with Donald Trump. Xi Jinping, in power for more than five years suddenly rustled up his first meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. Thus, “Kim Jong Un just sent a powerful message to U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of planned talks: China is back on North Korea’s side,” writes David Tweed for Bloomberg. “The surprise, highly secretive four-day trip ends a period of frosty ties between the longtime allies as China backed increasingly tough economic sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs.” Restored ties with China lift pressure off of isolated North Korea. Amid hardline rhetoric from the Trump administration about use of force and preemptive strikes for North Korea, China also signaled that any US military action on the peninsula must consider the Chinese response. – YaleGlobal
