Bloomberg: Comey’s Firing Helps Demean the US Globally

US intelligence officials maintain that Russia interfered in the US presidential election with false news spread over social media to discredit Hillary Clinton. The inexpensive campaign succeeded beyond Russians' wildest expectations. The US Russia scandal is “eating the U.S. from the inside, undermining the country's global role at least as much as President Donald Trump's erratic moves do,” reports Leonid Bershidsky for Bloomberg. Now Trump has fired James Comey, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who was leading an investigation into electon interference, collusion in the United States, and Trump business ties with Russia. An uproar has emerged with worries about politicized law enforcement, a US president installed by a hostile foreign power, who also opposes science and education initiatives that could truly empower the United States while favoring the coal industry over alternative energies. Russia supported Brexit to weaken the European Union, but failed in boosting far-right candidates in the Netherlands, Bulgaria and France. Allies may doubt US motives until an independent investigation is pursued and the many disturbing questions are settled. – YaleGlobal
