Brazilians Streaming into US Through Mexican Border

After Mexicans themselves, Brazilians make up the largest proportion of migrants entering the US via the Mexican border. Taking advantage of Mexico's waiving of entrance visa requirements for Brazilians, those looking to enter the US for work and residence frequently sign up with a trafficking agency to transport them into America. Though Brazil's economy is flourishing, employment and social mobility remains elusive for many in that country, leading them to seek a better life in the US. The American government is complaining about the massive influx of Brazilians, who frequently overstay tourist visas or are smuggled in altogether. As a result, Mexico may tighten its border restrictions. But more rigid immigration policies will not stop Brazilians from benefiting from the sizable remittances from family members who have already emigrated to the US. And certainly, these policies will not solve the problem of why Brazilians are leaving their country in the first place. – YaleGlobal
