Caixin: Xi Offers Clues to China’s Future Economic Policy

China will soon be the world's largest economy, and the world’s eyes are on China’s 19th National Congress of the Communist Party, which lays out an agenda and priorities for the next five years. President Xi Jinping admits that “uneven and inadequate development” is at odds with “people’s ever-growing demand for a better life.” China will not embark in any major policy shifts and aims for subtlety in its approach, with less aggressive growth targets, improved infrastructure, value-added endeavors and ongoing reforms particularly with state-owned enterprises. Xi emphasized a range of environmental protections: “China is to develop new technologies in green manufacturing and clean energy; to clean up air, water and soil pollution; to develop green finance; and to reduce emissions as per its commitments,” writes Wang Tao for Caixin. The speech also emphasized social protections and reduced inequality. – YaleGlobal
