Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the New Democracy party won a snap election in Greece, defeating Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. The ruling government lost support amid high youth unemployment and a struggling economy along with failure to deliver on promises to end austerity. Early results in an election gave New Democracy nearly 40 percent of the vote and Syriza just over 30 percent; far-right Golden Dawn did not achieve the threshold of 3 percent of votes to enter parliament. Greece has struggled since the euro crisis of 2009, and there were once fears that the series of bailouts could prompt Greece to leave the European Union and disrupt the broader EU economy. Turnout was low, and Mitsotakis “benefited from widespread anger at a landmark deal with North Macedonia over the name of the country - which it shares with a Greek region,” reports BBC News. New Democracy campaigned on privatizing services and reducing taxes. – YaleGlobal
