China Tried Muscling South Korea in Yellow Sea

South Korean military officials visited China in July and were advised by Chinese naval officials of new limits for the area of operations, according to unnamed sources. “When China and North Korea drew their borders in 1962, they agreed to use 124 degrees east longitude as their maritime demarcation line,” reports Jeong Yong-Su for Korea JoongAng Daily. “Although it should only serve as the border between the two countries, China was insisting its demarcation extends south of the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border between the two Koreas. “ South Korea has not recognized the line. China also asked a South Korean admiral to put a stop to South Korea-US joint maritime exercises in the Yellow Sea. The report concludes that China continues to look for ways to extend its maritime reach throughout the region, thus unnerving neighbors. – YaleGlobal
