China’s Diplomatic Gain Is Taiwan’s Loss

Taiwan and China compete for diplomatic alliances. Taiwan often finds itself on the losing end of the competition, especially as China becomes more integrated in the global political and economic systems. Costa Rica’s decision to create diplomatic relations with China shocked politicians in Taiwan. Analysts expect other Central American countries, such as Nicaragua, to follow Costa Rica’s lead. To retain ties, Taiwanese officials have visited nations throughout Central and Latin America, courting officials. Most of the 24 nations that recognize Taiwan are small countries. Costa Rica’s motive for creating an alliance with China was twofold: First, in an era of “checkbook diplomacy,” China offers economic appeal. Also, China offers the promise of trade, specifically assisting in any search for oil and minerals. Money, not politics, is the big diplomatic lure for many small developing nations. – YaleGlobal
