Covering the World

The Associated Press is making inroads around the globe, reporting international news, at the same time that foreign bureaus of major newspapers are closing. With 243 foreign bureaus, the AP is the world’s largest news organization. It is the first Western newsgroup to open an office in North Korea and has more than 200 staffers in Iraq. By maintaining reporters throughout the globe, the AP provides an invaluable service to readers, uncovering stories where others do not venture. The internet and ever-increasing speed of communication create new ways to deliver news, and the AP is determined to compete with multimedia. In a globalized world, the demands of journalism have changed; for now, the AP adapts through expansion and diversification. Some small US markets lament the AP’s international focus, arguing that local news is vital for maintaining their readers.
