Danish Canal Customers

The Suez and Panama canals are in competition as shipping traffic grows and container ships get bigger. With a new growing middle class throughout Asia, shipping containers are increasingly headed west to east rather than the other way around. Writing for Al-Ahram Weekly, Niveen Wahish reviews shippers’ concerns as expressed to Egyptian journalists attending a tour arranged by the Danish-Egyptian Dialogue Institute. Danish businesses praise the Suez Canal’s lower tolls, yet call for improved services, including additional lanes to allow two-way traffic and deeper channels to accommodate larger ships. Such investments are underway in Panama, resulting in increased tolls. One shipping company spokesperson pointed out that Suez’s lower tolls compensated for a route that was slightly longer than that provided by the canal in Panama. Shipping giants are like consumers in search of bargains. –YaleGlobal
