Dare to Compare?
The nations of Europe offer a mixed bag when it comes to welcoming immigrants, according to a study from the British Council and the Migration Policy Group, a Brussels-based think tank, partially funded by the European Commission. The Migrant Integration Policy Index assesses countries based on labor-market access, family reunification, long-term residence, political participation, access to nationality and legislation that combats discrimination. Sweden, Portugal and Belgium had high rankings, while Greece and Australia ranked low. On average, Europe scored poorly for providing access to citizenship. High application fees, long delays for processing applications from children of immigrants, and high income requirements were among the reasons for poor rankings. The study notes that all European nations have room for improvement. – YaleGlobal
