Declare Victory and Get on With Ousting Gaddafi

As a conference in London revealed, the international community is divided over the next steps for Libya.. The task of saving Libyan civilians from massacre has been completed, argues Mark Malloch-Brown, former UN deputy secretary. Debate focuses what UN Resolution 1973 allows: Germany and Italy support a ceasefire, the US and UK suggest more military action is required, and Saudi Arabia and the African Union were absent from the conference. Malloch-Brown suggests that political intervention is a greater need than military intervention and urges the international community to specify goals. Those who protest Gaddafi’ ouster should recall that the Libyan leader has a record of assassination attempts and funding opposition movements throughout Africa. Malloch-Brown offers a blueprint for the international community: Pursue straightforward diplomacy and a new UN Security Council resolution that recognizes the Transitional National Council as the legitimate interim government for Libya. – YaleGlobal
