Education Is No Protection
Columnist Bob Herbert begins his New York Times op-ed with a critique of a conference held in New York to update executives on the new trend of outsourcing white collar jobs to countries with an educated but cheaper workforce. Such 'upscale outsourcing' is a relatively new phenomenon in much of corporate America. In the current US job market, prospects for white collar jobs already look bleak, and Herbert fears that this problem will snowball into a larger threat to the long-term U.S. economy. Those who support outsourcing say that it will benefit both the countries exporting the jobs and the countries acquiring them. But Herbert considers it a "national security issue" and wonders why it's not a major issue in the current US presidential campaign. – YaleGlobal
