El País: Image Manipulation Technologies

New digital technologies known as “deepfake” can manipulate images and faces in realistic ways that trickl viewers. Governments and companies have long adjusted photographs and videos for propaganda or advertising purposes. However, Moisés Naím explains that deepfake is more dangerous, with improved technology that is readily accessible: “Everything about these videos is hyper realistic, and the person’s voice and gestures are so exactly rendered that it becomes impossible to know it is a forgery without using sophisticated verification programs.” Naím warns that fake images could be used to settle personal grudges or even instigate social unrest and international conflict. He urges controls on internet anonymity – and also recommends use of technology blocks by media organizations to prevent images being altered and harsh punishments for the purveyors of doctored images. Democracy depends on accurate information, while the fakers are intent on misinformation and uncertainty about truth. – YaleGlobal
