European Allies Reject US-Iran Escalation: Al Jazeera
The United States and Iran are escalating tensions in a region already wracked with conflict, repression, economic struggle and millions of displaced people. Inspectors report that Iran is in compliance with an international nuclear deal, but the United States withdrew from the agreement and re-imposed sanctions. Most recently, the United States sent a aircraft bomber group to the region. Iran suggests it may reduce its compliance, Saudi Arabia has claimed sabotage of oil tankers off the coast of UAE, and Europe signals it is in no hurry to help the United States in a military conflict. “Federica Mogherini, the European Union's diplomatic chief, stressed the need for dialogue following a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who made a last-minute visit to Brussels on Monday to share information on 'escalating' threats from Iran,” reports Al Jazeera. Mogherini reminded Pompeo “that we are living in a crucial delicate moment where the most responsible attitude to take is that of maximum restraint." The UK representative warned about a possible accident, and France rejected US sanctions as long as Iran remains in compliance, and the United Nations calls for restraint on all sides. – YaleGlobal
