European Purgatory: Migrant Smugglers Helping Refugees Return to Turkey

A sizable number of Europeans have protested immigration in general and specifically the arrival of thousands of refugees from Syria, Iraq and other conflict zones. Concerns run high about security, competition for jobs and a changing culture, and some countries have erected barriers in response. Smugglers that once delivered refugees to Europe are guiding weary and frustrated refugees back to Turkey. “The EU has not offered those stranded in Greece adequate protection,” explain Riham Alkousaa and Maximilian Popp for Spiegel International. “Those who decide to return to Turkey make their way back across the border with the help of smugglers because no legal pathway has been established.” Many are fathers who have been separated from family members. Conditions on the Greek-Macedonian border are dire with inadequate shelter, food and water. Likewise, procedures are inadequate with the president of the European Parliament calling the crisis a disgrace for the EU. – YaleGlobal
