Gates Gives $200 Million to Aid Poor Nations

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is creating a new program to combat health problems in developing nations, including tuberculosis, malnutrition, and diarrhea. In an effort to divert funds from “rich-world” diseases and to invest in solutions to the problems that affect two-thirds of the world, the Gates Foundation is offering $200 million in competitive grants to scientists and health researchers. 90% of diseases receive only 10% of the funding and researching, since most research occurs in “rich-world” nations who are more concerned with the issues that directly affect their own populations. Infectious diseases in poorer countries negatively affect developing economies, Gates argued, and thus should be a focus not only for development organizations and health workers, but also for business concerns from richer nations. –YaleGlobal
