Germany Says UK Could Leave EU if Cameron Insists on Migrant Quotas

Freedom of movement for its citizens is a fundamental right in the European Union, and some Germans suggest that the United Kingdom could set off on its own if it tries to set internal immigration limits. “Cameron has said that he will reform Britain’s relationship with the EU before holding an in-out referendum in 2017,” reports Peter Dominiczak for the Telegraph. That could include a quota system or requiring immigrants have a job lined up. “Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has said that she would not support any plans to change the freedom of movement rules that allow an unlimited number of EU migrants to live and work in the UK.” The 2011 census showed that immigrants made up about 13 percent of the UK’s population. The Schengen Agreement in 1985 and Schengen Convention in 1990 led to end of border controls among participating countries. – YaleGlobal
