A Global Mission for China and America

Cooperation and fair play do more to promote mutual and global prosperity than bickering or conflict. Former US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick points out seven concrete steps that China and its economic partners can take to ensure sustainable, responsible growth that minimizes harm both inside of China and outside. Among his recommendations, Zoellick proposes more international private-sector investment and development assistance for China and the elevation of current Chinese business practices to international standards. He also urges China to provide a safety net for its people, leadership on preventable diseases and political pressure on Sudan. “China wants its economic rise to complement, not replace, the current order,” Zoellick writes. The world looks on as the US and China develop more intricate connections, both together and with world markets, and it is in the interest of both powers to display responsible leadership. – YaleGlobal
