Global Obama Versus Nationalist Europe

US President Barack Obama is urging Europeans to stay united to better manage he increasing tally of cross-border challenges what author Daniel Williams calls “unbridled globalization.” Writing for TheWorldPost, he explains, “The fight is between the globalizers, of which Obama has emerged as a key spokesman, and nationalists, represented by a host of right-wing parties and populist politicians with whom Obama has no truck. Obama and the globalists believe in the primacy of multinational agreements refereed by international organizations and rules which, once in place, are beyond democratic review by national governments.” During his visit to Europe, Obama warned the United Kingdom that organizing a bilateral trade agreement would not be easy and that the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership would take priority. In Germany, he also praised an openness to immigration and support for the Syrian refugees. Williams concludes that opposition to such issues varies, and the United States is as polarized as Europe over issues like trade and immigration. – YaleGlobal
