Going Off to College for Less (Passport Required)

Higher education has become a global commodity, and students seek out both great bargains and the very best of brand names, reports Tamar Lewin for the New York Times. “Universities worldwide – many of them in Canada and England – are competing for the same pool of affluent, well-qualified students, and more American students are heading overseas not just for a semester abroad, but for their full degree program,” Lewin writes, in an article that focuses on US students studying in Europe. International students typically pay higher fees than domestic students, while giving programs some cachet. But a college education remains a distinct product on each side of the Atlantic, with more specialization in Scotland and more feedback and support in the US. Students cannot forget that a college education is no end in and of itself, and eventually must demonstrate what they can produce with their degrees. – YaleGlobal
