The Guardian: Syria Resumes Airstrikes

The Syrian government resumed airstrikes in the wake of alleged poison gas attacks by rebels in Aleppo. The bombings in north Syria are in violation of the truce brokered by Russia and Turkey that enabled “relative calm to the country’s north for the past two months,” reports the Guardian. Meanwhile, the rebels have denied carrying out the attacks and accuse that the Syrian government of undermining the peace treaty that went into effect on September 17. According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Thiqa News Agency, “government warplanes pounded rebel-held areas west and south of Aleppo city.” Syrian government officials in turn accused the rebels of wounding more than 100 people in a “suspected toxic gas attack” in Aleppo and asked the UN Security Council to take action against what it calls “terrorist crimes.” Russia, as key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is in talks to facilitate a ceasefire in Idlib. –YaleGlobal
