Hillary Clinton Admits US Role in Mexico Drug Wars

Mexico is a source as well as major transshipment point for most of the illegal drugs moving into the US – a trade route marked with thousands of cases of torture, murder and ruined lives. Yet American teenagers and college students do not connect their casual use of marijuana and cocaine at lively, secure campus parties with the brutal violence on display throughout Mexico. During a visit to Mexico, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admitted that demand for drugs north of the border is “insatiable” and fuels violence in the south. “During a visit to Mexico, Clinton never wavered from a tone that repeatedly stressed the concept of "shared responsibility" that appeared designed to address historic Mexican sensibilities over heavy-handed treatment from its northern neighbour,” reports Jo Tuckman for the Guardian. Using weapons purchased in the US, trafficking groups battle to gain control of the illegal trade and huge profits. Meanwhile Mexico posts troops, de facto martial law in some communities, according to Tuckman, to stem the violence. – YaleGlobal
