In India, Economic Prosperity Is Spreading Slowly

The boom in India's technology sector, and its status as the top destination for many American and European outsourcers, has brought the country high growth and a widespread boost in standard of living – at least for the middle and upper classes. But the majority of Indians, especially those in outlying rural areas, still live in poverty and do not reap the benefits of India's success stories. That situation may be changing, according to several prominent economists. As the country as a whole grows richer, the new money will generate a demand for lower-skilled workers and improved remuneration for many levels of work. Maids, housekeepers, driving instructors, construction workers, and caterers are likely to experience increased demand. A better distribution of income is still needed, writes The New York Times. If it can be improved, the wealth being generated in the technology market could eventually improve the welfare of all Indians. – YaleGlobal
