Indian Techies Out, Teachers In

American tech workers have been claiming that Indian immigrants are stealing their jobs ever since the tech bubble of the 1990s burst. Amidst this controversy, the fact that Indians are increasingly filling American teaching positions has widely gone unnoticed. With a shortage of instructors to the tune of over 700,000, however, this influx of professional labor is far more welcome. Indeed, American school administrators are actively recruiting Indians to fill empty positions. After all, says this Asia Times article, Indian teachers are well educated, hardworking, English-speaking, and prepared to work for lower salaries than their American counterparts. "As she has more than five years experience, her salary is more than $35,000, which is dismal by US standards but great by Indian," noted the husband of one America-bound Indian schoolteacher. Some are concerned that the demand will dry up and that Indian teachers will eventually be forced to return to India, as have many tech workers in recent years. But with such a sizable shortage of teachers, Indian educators will likely continue to thrive in US schools for the foreseeable future. – YaleGlobal
