Iran Nuclear Deal Is Reached With World
Six nations brokered a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear ability for 10 years in exchange for an end to debilitating sanctions. The accord could mark the start of a new relationship between the United States and Iran, if the latter cooperates on inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency. After 20 months of negotiations, Iran agreed to a 98 percent reduction in its nuclear-fuel stockpile; shipping uranium overseas for enrichment, most likely to Russia; reducing centrifuges and limits on warheads and testing. “Diplomats also came up with unusual procedure to ‘snap back’ the sanctions against Iran if an eight-member panel determines that Tehran is violating the nuclear provisions,” reports the New York Times. Iranians are optimistic while hardliners in Iran, the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia express doubts. US President Barack Obama insists the agreement is better than no agreement, curtailing a pointless nuclear arm race in the Middle East. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani insists the country does not want a nuclear weapon. – YaleGlobal
