Israeli Assassination Draws World Outrage

Israeli missiles killed Sheik Ahmed Yassin, the spiritual leader of the terrorist group Hamas, on March 22 morning as he left a Mosque. Hamas is blamed for many of the suicide bombings against Israel, and Sheik Yassin is thought to have ordered several of them. The killing was lauded in Israel as a major victory against terrorism, but was loudly condemned elsewhere in the world – especially Europe and North Africa – as an unnecessary escalation of the conflict. Some have likewise condemned the targeting of an "old man in a wheelchair". Judging from the immediate reaction, this assassination will bring on more violence in an already bloody war. Students in Egypt, all set to celebrate the signing of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty have instead taken to the streets, loudly calling for retaliation. Images abound of Palestinians likewise crying for revenge. – YaleGlobal
