It’s a Fat World, After All
Americans are not the only overweight people anymore. Thanks to food companies such as McDonald's and Kellogg, Americans are exporting their corpulence to the outside world. But the rising incidence of chronic, diet-related health problems such as diabetes and heart disease are leading to greater scrutiny of companies that manufacture processed foods. As with other goods, American food products abroad can also become targets of regulation. In Europe, especially, the 'War Against Fat' is putting increased pressure on multinational food corporations to offer healthier products. One newly proposed EU regulation aims to set stricter standards on the health claims manufacturers can make, a move that has some investors worried that slimmer figures might mean slimmer profits. – YaleGlobal
