It’s Now Hollywood Outsourcing to India
The Indian government is altering its decades-old stance of suspicion towards Hollywood and foreign cultural influence, and deliberatly positioning India as an outsourcing destination for the international film industry. India has become an attractive location for future blockbusters, offering cost savings of forty to sixty percent on typical big-budget productions and potential for profit. The major Hollywood company ARRI Film and TV recently held a seminar that expounded on the benefits of production in India. Patrick Crowley, the producer of The Bourne Supremacy, which was shot in Goa, emphasized the professionalism and skill of Indian film technicians. India’s production facilities are increasingly competitive as well. Unlike the IT industry, film production has a long and distinguished history in India, culminating in the country’s own lavish Bollywood productions that have recently started to enchant audiences around the world. On the Road Productions has achieved a central role in the new Hollywood and India cooperative model, and owner Dilpeep Singh Rathore is ebullient about the future of international film production in India. He suggests that India has both the “technical and creative depth” to eventually “emerge as a serious rival to Hollywood” itself. – YaleGlobal
