Korea Times: Talks Underway to End the Korean War

A formal peace treaty will be the topic for two summits, one between North and South Korea in April and a later one with the United States and North Korea. “The two Koreas remain technically at war as the Korean War ended only with the armistice agreement,” reports Kim Rahn for the Korea Times. North Korea, China and the United Nations Command signed the armistice agreement that suspended hostilities and created the demilitarized zone dividing North and South in 1953, and any new agreement requires South Korea’s participation, too. North Korea has said it will consider giving up its nuclear weapons program if the US and its allies remove military threats for the Kim regime. That could include removing the 35,000 US troops based in South Korea as well as its nuclear shield. Denuclearization is a complex task, and all parties would have to agree on details.
