Liberals Win in Canada: Toronto Star

Justin Trudeau will continue on as Canada’s prime minister but without winning a majority in the 338-seat Commons, he will be forced to negotiate with other parties. Preliminary results showed he was 13 seats short. Conservatives won the overall popular vote, defeating some high-profile ministers. “The overall result reflected voter ambivalence toward the two major federal parties, which had been deadlocked in public polls throughout the bitter 41-day campaign, one of the country’s most divisive elections in recent memory,” reports Tonda MacCharles for the Toronto Star. “No one issue emerged as dominant, and no platform captured the imagination of voters.” Trudeau suggested voters rejected austerity measures, tax cuts and any moves from the Conservatives to give up on the battle against climate change. Jagmeet Singh won 24 seats for the New Democrats with an upbeat campaign and promises to spend $16 billion to stop climate change. Bloc Québécois won 34 seats with its leader vowing to work with other parties issue by issue. MacCharles points out that Conservatives will have the power to open investigations previously blocked in the ethics and justice committees. – YaleGlobal
