Lingering Job Insecurity of Silicon Valley

Despite the recent upsurge in business activity, skilled technology workers remain in weak demand in the US. Experienced and well-educated computer scientists and software engineers - many of whom boast PhDs - are falling victim to broad market forces that, until recently, have affected primarily blue-collar workers. "You have multiple effects going on: automation, outsourcing and business strategy all playing a role," says one public policy expert. Outsourcing has become feared among technology workers and a hotly-debated issue on the presidential campaign trail, but many economists say the impact of the trend is exaggerated. They point to increased productivity as the real culprit. But while higher productivity has stifled job creation in the tech sector, it has led to industry growth and higher profits, which might stimulate new hiring. – YaleGlobal
