Mexican Immigration Still Up in Air

A meeting between US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Mexican Foreign Secretary Jorge Castañeda ended with a $25 million pledge to help coordinate border security efforts between Mexican and US law enforcement officials. The larger issue of whether the US will permit temporary workers to enter the US from Mexico is still elusive, despite being one of Mexican president Vicente Fox's main goals for his administration. His efforts to forge a US-Mexico agreement on immigration remain sidelined after the US turned its attention to the war on terrorism in the wake of Sept. 11. For millions of Mexican families who depend on remittances from relatives working illegally in the US, however, an early resolution of the issue would bring them much-needed financial security. – YaleGlobal
