My Saudi Valentine
Love is universal, but methods for finding it differ from culture to culture. Today, most Saudi relationships begin with the help of internet networking sites, cell phones or servants who act as intermediaries. In a society that strictly prohibits contact between the opposite sexes, let alone open displays of affection, starting any relationship relies on immense trust and some amount of daring. Saudi Arabia’s ban on Valentine’s Day and the color red throughout the holiday week does not mean the citizens do not seek or enjoy sharing love with a fellow human, explains Rajaa Alsanea, a Saudi studying in the US. Discovering and appreciating love is more important than how one sets out to do it. – YaleGlobal
