N. Korea Pulls Out of Non-Proliferation Treaty

Responding to North Korea's announcement that it is withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, South Korean President Kim Dae Jung said today "The nuclear issue is tied to our life and death… We must have the patience to resolve the issue peacefully." The Washington Post, in this in-depth analysis of the situation, reports that "Shortly after making its announcement, North Korea unleashed a fresh barrage of sharp rhetoric, daring the United States to "a fire-to-fire standoff," while warning that "a new Korean War will finally lead to the Third World War," in a newspaper article carried in the official state press." The official announcement was met with criticism from North Korea's neighbors, China and Japan, as well as the US and the UK. – YaleGlobal
