NewsChina: Stopping the Pollution Pipeline

Pollution, destroying quality of life for many communities in China, is the source of numerous public complaints. In response, China has started environmental inspections nationwide and cracks down on violators. After two rounds of inspections since 2016, about 29,000 companies were fined with more than 1,500 people charged. Inspection results are included in job-performance reviews, and more than 18,000 local officials were cited. Inspectors conduct interviews and review documents and public complaints followed by site visits. Complaints address garbage, air, overuse of water and noise pollution, industrial discharge and illegal construction in natural areas. Provinces must respond with action plans, open to the public, within 30 days. NewsChina concludes that a sustainable program requires financial support including incentives for environmental protection and skilled project governance. – YaleGlobal
