Not All Bad News

Newspapers have had to contend with lots of competition. Reporters are likely to run their own blogs, fewer people read newspapers, and the internet has become a popular source for the news. Yet newspapers are still thriving, especially in Asia and Latin America. The newly literate regard newspaper reading as a sign of their achievements. In countries like India, the government and NGOs lead literary campaigns that boost newspaper sales. China has also seen an increase in newspapers sales, which can be explained in part by the Communist Party's investment in literacy and also increasing wealth in the country. Newspaper owners worry about their place in an increasingly digitalized world, yet their future is secure in developing nations, at least for now. --YaleGlobal
