An Outsourcing Giant Fights Back

Azim Premji, the founder of one of India’s leading technology giant Wipro, has found himself on the defensive of late. Premji's business is one of the leading outsourcing concerns in the world, with a net worth of $8 billion and clients from the top layer of their industries. As the domestic debates in America over job loss and outsourcing grow, . Premji has come to symbolize exactly what Americans are afraid of. His response to these accusations has been that the fears are unfounded. Indians control maybe 800,000 jobs in the technology sector, whereas the US has 10.2 million. Likewise, India controls a tiny proportion of call center jobs. Moreover, the money saved by American companies when they choose to use cheaper Indian labor goes right back into the US economy – the financial sector alone has saved $8 billion according to Premji's estimates. Indian businessmen and government officials know, however, that if the election year outcry in America continues, they may see this burgeoning industry disappear. As such, they are starting an aggressive marketing campaign to convince US businesses that outsourcing is not quite as immoral as American politicians might make it seem. – YaleGlobal
