A Passage from India
Author Suketu Mehta moved to America from India as a teenager with the expectation that it would bring him and his family economic prosperity. As he writes in The New York Times, future generations of Americans may find themselves trying to travel in the opposite direction, as more US companies move jobs to India. In a sense, India's gains from outsourcing are the rewards of decades of hard work and demanding academic standards much more strict than those in the US. Mehta argues that as many Americans are struggling to comprehend how outsourcing and India's strong work force relate to their own livelihoods and lifestyles, Indian-Americans, one of the country's most prosperous ethnic groups, offer an invaluable perspective on what drew them to America's shores in the first place. – YaleGlobal
