Pew Survey Says America Most Religious of Wealthy Nations
Pew Survey Says America Most Religious of Wealthy Nations
Religion is much more important to Americans than to people living in other wealthy nations. Fully six-in-ten Americans say religion plays a very important role in their lives compared with just 33% of those surveyed in Great Britain and even fewer people in Canada, Western Europe and Japan.
The 44-nation survey of the Pew Global Attitudes Project shows stark regional differences over the personal importance of religion. Throughout Africa, Latin America, and in Muslim countries, there is broad agreement that religion is very important. But secularism is prevalent in Europe. Americans' views are closer to people in developing nations than to the publics of developed nations.
