Philippines’ Next President: Implications for ASEAN

Voters in the Philippines fell in line with global trends of frustration over bureaucratic processes, by selecting a maverick leader who promises to shake up government, end corruption and bring rapid improvement. Rodrigo Duterte was elected president. “Standing on a platform of eradicating crime and corruption that have plagued the country, Duterte has shocked his countrymen’s sensibilities with his colourful language, threats to kill criminals and shut down Congress should an impeachment attempt be made when he comes to power,” writes Mely Caballero-Anthony for RSIS Commentary. “He has also startled neighbours with his tough statements on foreign relations.” The country of 100 million has enjoyed economic growth averaging above 6 percent since 2010, but poverty and inequality linger. The election has regional implications. The Philippines, chair for ASEAN in 2017, will be expected to preside over contentious issues including contested claims in the South China Sea.
